
The 4th Summer Bird Hike, held on 11–12 July 2025 in Phedikhola–1, Syangja, has concluded with resounding success, bringing together more than 60 participants for a weekend of learning, exploration, and community engagement.
Organized by Pokhara Bird Society and supported by Phedikhola Rural Municipality, the event aimed to promote bird-based tourism, raise conservation awareness, and build capacity among students, guides, and nature enthusiasts.
What Happened:
Day 1:
- Participants were warmly welcomed at Machhapuchhre View Point by local representatives and community members.
- A 2-hour guided bird hike recorded 27 species, followed by a trail clean-up and educational talks.
- Participants stayed with homestay families, enjoyed local snacks, cultural performances, and presentations by renowned ornithologists.
Day 2:
- Early morning birdwatching in teams led to an exciting record of 66 bird species, including Nepal’s only endemic bird—the Spiny Babbler, and the critically endangered White-rumped Vulture.
- A parallel butterfly observation session recorded 31 species.
- The event closed with group reflections, discussions on bird tourism, and a local lunch before the formal farewell ceremony.
Impact and Highlights:
- New birding hotspot discovered in Phedikhola–1.
- Nearly 25 kg of waste was collected during the trail clean-up.
- Strong collaboration between local government, students, and conservationists.
- Sparked interest in sustainable tourism among locals and participants.
- Strengthened the role of youth in conservation efforts.
This hike wasn’t just about spotting birds—it was about connecting with nature, learning by doing, and contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
